Before deciding on which tent to buy, take heed of this buying guide.

Choose the design that will work best for you. Some are free standing while others will require lines and stakes of set-up. While you want a bigger tent, aim for one that weighs no more than three to four pounds per person. You will also have to consider breathability, durability and price. The best advice when shopping for a backpacking tent is to try it before you buy. Be sure that you set the tent up in the store and crawl inside. Check the insides to make sure that it will guard you against all elements. You want a tent that will keep out wind, snow, sun and rain. You want it to be sturdy enough in rugged terrain as well as in level ground. And you will feel more secure if you know that there are no openings that will allow creeping creatures inside.
