propane camping stove

Monday, June 29th, 2009

When trying to decide on the kind of camping stove to bring to your next adventure, the choice of fuel is always a major consideration. Fuel supplies that are easy to transport are great when going to a long distance site. Fuel supplies that can be disconnected from camping stoves make life easier. They come in either liquid form or in canisters. A propane camping stove will be fueled by a compressed transportable liquid derived from petroleum products or natural gas.

Liquid forms of fuel are cheaper and are practical because they perform well in a wide range of conditions. Fuel in canisters heat up very fast but tend to be expensive. Disposal of the empty canisters can also be a problem. There are two things to remember about choosing the fuel to use with your camping stove. Be sure that your fuel is usable with your stove. And make sure that you have enough supply.

Ronco rotisserie

Friday, June 26th, 2009

I love to cook. While making our wedding gifts wish list (bridal registry), I filled the list with cooking gear. And one among my list is the Ronco rotisserie because I love roasted chicken. I even remember growing up and my dad would make his famous baked chicken. Everybody just loved it. When I was finally old enough to cook, he taught me how to make his baked chicken. It was really simple: Marinate the whole chicken in oyster sauce and lots of pepper for at least an hour then bake it accordingly.

Luckily enough, someone gave us a Ronco rotisserie. Now with my Ronco rotisserie, I can try new recipes and enjoy a more evenly cooked chicken. Though I have to admit nothing yet tops my dad’s recipe.

camping dinnerware

Friday, June 26th, 2009

Savor your meals even if you’re not dining first class or in the comfort of your own home. For outdoor dining, bring along camping dinnerware made of non-delicate materials. There are lots of designs, colors and styles that look very attractive even if they’re not fine china. Go for colorful plates and cups to brighten up any outdoor informal gathering.

Always remember to pack your camping dinnerware in one storage container. Use a picnic basket or plastic bin with handles. This will enable you to just pick your camping dinnerware up in one go whenever needed. Make sure that everything is clean and dry before storing them for later use.

pen knife

Wednesday, June 24th, 2009

My uncle is into hand held gadgets. Besides getting the latest phones on the market, he also has a voice activated directory at his disposal. One time he got me a pen that had tear gas on it. He also gave me a pen knife. Whenever I see him, I also noticed that he always has three pens attached to his shirt pocket; a real pen, a tear gas pen, and a pen knife.

All three pens look alike and are functional pens—they all write. What separates the other two from the real pen is the weight. They are heavier (but not much) and bulkier (not much also) than the real deal. My uncle says that it’s nice to carry the pens around. It gives him security — though he hopes that he don’t get to use it.

down sleeping bag

Friday, June 19th, 2009

Get a good night’s sleep even if you are not in your own comfortable bed at home. Use a down sleeping bag during camping. Usually, the benefits of a restful sleep may just be the difference between a wonderful camping experience or not. Among the high performance sleeping bags in the world, down is still the preferred insulator.

A down sleeping bag takes up less than half the space of a comparable synthetic bag. It’s about one kilogram lighter too. Down is more efficient at moving body moisture resulting to warmer nights outdoors. It is nature’s finest insulator and nothing matches it for comfort and molding to a camper’s body.

Gerber pocket knives

Monday, June 15th, 2009

When I was in the second grade, I joined the boy scouts. There I met my future best friend, Davie. We liked the same things: camping, video games and knives. He is the one who introduced me to Gerber pocket knives. We would go to the mall on weekends and just go to the camping goods section and look at the different knives by Gerber.

Gerber knives have been in existence since the late 30’s. It had a reputation of making quality knives with legendary blades. The Gerber pocket knives carry the same quality blades as its more famous big brother, the tactical knife. Even now as an adult I have a Gerber pocket knife. I use it for everything from cutting strings to opening hard to open plastic enclosed items.

SOG knives

Friday, June 12th, 2009

My cousin is a member of the navy seals. For my birthday last year, he gave me a SOG knife. He said SOG knives are the best in the world. It has unparallel sharpness and balance. When we were growing up as kids, his dad would show us how knife fighting as well as how to throw knives. My mom wasn’t too happy about this.

We would make a target out of half inch plywood and throw knives ten to fifteen feet away. Some knives would fly funny or the edge would chip but not the SOG knives. One time I hit the marble floor and the floor chipped but the knife stayed sharp. My cousin became really good at it. He can pull out a concealed knife, hurl it at you 15 feet away and hit you between your eyes. It was one of the reasons why he became a navy seal.

backpacking tent

Thursday, June 11th, 2009

Before deciding on which tent to buy, take heed of this buying guide.

Choose the design that will work best for you. Some are free standing while others will require lines and stakes of set-up. While you want a bigger tent, aim for one that weighs no more than three to four pounds per person. You will also have to consider breathability, durability and price.

The best advice when shopping for a backpacking tent is to try it before you buy. Be sure that you set the tent up in the store and crawl inside. Check the insides to make sure that it will guard you against all elements. You want a tent that will keep out wind, snow, sun and rain. You want it to be sturdy enough in rugged terrain as well as in level ground. And you will feel more secure if you know that there are no openings that will allow creeping creatures inside.

Eureka screen house

Thursday, June 11th, 2009

My family loves to go on picnics. We often go the park on weekends and have a barbeque. The kids play in the lake while I cook my world famous grilled porterhouse steak. During our last picnic and camping trip we brought our Eureka screen house. It was very practical, we placed all the cook food inside the tent afterwards to keep them warm and to keep the mosquitoes away.

The Eureka screen house is great for picnics. It has full length zippers so I can enter quickly and comfortably. It can also house a small dining area. It keeps out the bugs when we eat. When we were done, it is easily disassembled and packs neatly. It is very practical for outings with a group of friends who love to cook. It’s like bringing your own mini house with you.
